The Common Core
Why Are We Here?
-Build Capacity (strengthening the skills,
competencies and abilities of people) in
regard to the common core standards
-Grade level meetings will ensure that we have a
common understanding of the expectations
across the district.
-Enable grade level teams across the district to
plan Common Core aligned math units. (EM)

Mathematical Practices
Mathematical practices (“instructional practices”) = NYS’s process strands,
but are embedded within the CCSS content.
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively
3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others
4. Model with mathematics
5. Use appropriate tools strategically
6. Attend to precision
7. Look for and make use of structure
8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

Common Core Vocabulary
• Fluent- “Fast and Accurate” Does not
necessarily mean mentally.
• Mentally-In your head without paper and
pencil.
• From Memory-Instant recall of facts.
• Standard Algorithm- Any algorithm that
allows students to compute sums, differences,
quotients and products based on place value
including partials and "traditional"
Concepts
• 1) The Common Core is based on a number
sense approach. Therefore, understanding of
addition and multiplication from memory
implies understanding of subtraction and
division.*

The End Game
• There is less, but it is very focused
• The specific is the end goal, how we get there
is what will change
• Understand each standard at a deeper levelwhat is the standard requiring students to
know and be able to do

• These Questions Are NOT Test Samplers
• These sample questions are a change from
what NYSED has traditionally provided to
schools to illustrate changes to assessments.
They were developed primarily for the
purposes of communications and training.
They are not test samplers, and are not
meant to mirror full‐length assessments.
• How to Use Different Aspects of the Sample
Questions
• Interpret the way the standards are conceptualized in each
question.
• Note the multiple ways the standard is assessed throughout
the sample questions.
• Take note of numbers (e.g., fractions instead of whole
numbers) used in the samples.
• Pay attention to the strong distractors in each multiple‐choice
question.
• Don’t consider these questions to be the only way the
standard will be assessed.
• Don’t assume that the sample questions represent a
mini‐version of future state assessments.
