Common Core State Standards
Fast Facts
During the 4 years between 1997 to 2002, the amount of new information
produced in the world was equal to the amount produced over the entire
previous history of the world. (Darling – Hammond et al. 2008)
25 years ago, 95% of jobs required low skills, today only 10% are lowskills jobs. (Darling – Hammond et al. 2008)
Children who leave school today without strong literacy skills will
not find a job.
Common Core…
stresses the importance of critical citizenship.
emphasizes higher-level comprehension.
conveys that intellectual growth occurs through time,
across years, and across disciplines.
calls for proficiency, complexity, and independence.
aims to put every state on the same measuring stick.
respects the professional judgment of classroom teachers.
Bloom’s Taxonomy

Evaluation
• Bloom’s taxonomy is used
to evaluate course
materials and develop
class activities that call for
more than recalling facts
DOK Levels
•
4 Levels:
1. Recall
2. Skill/Concept
3. Strategic Thinking
4. Extended Thinking
• DOK works well with CCSS
in creating activities that
require students to think
critically and problem
solve.
“Every teacher in every subject is
responsible for helping students
think critically, and writing is the
best way master that skill”
(Reeves, 2011).

Why writing is important
1. Writing is a skill that uses many
learned strategies to accomplish
an end goal.
2. Writing deepens a student’s
learning (when used as a way to
better understand content).
Common Core Writing Standards
The ten anchor standards for writing are grouped the following way:
o Text Types and Purposes
o Argumentative
o Informative/Explanatory
o Narrative
o Production and Distribution of Writing
o Research to Build and Present Knowledge
o Range of Writing
**Note: The writing standards are grade-level specific for grades K-8
and in two-year grade bands (9-10 and 11-12) at the high school
level.
Common Core Writing Standards –
Anchor Standards 1-3
W.CCR.1
W.CCR.3
Anchor standard 1 is about
Anchor standard 3 is about

Anchor standard 2 is about
informative/explanatory
writing, which is writing to
explain something in detail.
Common Core Writing Standards –
Anchor Standards 4-6
W.CCR.4
Anchor standard 4 is about
producing a coherent piece of
writing.
W.CCR.5
Anchor standard 5 is all about
the writing process. It
addresses the need for
planning, revising, editing, and
rewriting.
W.CCR.6
Anchor standard 6 is about
Students using technology to:
1. Produce and publish writing
2. Interact and collaborate
with others
Common Core Writing Standards –
Anchor Standards 7-9
W.CCR.7
Anchor standard 7 is about
conducting research projects.
W.CCR.8
Anchor standard 8 is about
gathering information for
research.
W.CCR.9
Anchor standard 9 is about
the ability to draw
evidence from both
literary and informational
texts in order to support
analysis, reflection, and
research.
Common Core Writing Standards –
Anchor Standard 10
W.CCR.10
Anchor standard 10 addresses the ability to
write for shorter time frames, and the ability
to write over an extended amount of time.
The writing standards
emphasize…
• the three types of writing:
– Argumentative
– Informative/Explanatory
– Narrative
• the writing process.
• the quality of student writing.
• writing as integral even for very
young students.
• writing across all disciplines and
for real purposes.
• “writing routinely,” which means
to make writing a habit.
• the shared responsibility when it
comes to teaching writing.

Three Appendices
The K-12 Standards Document
• Three main sections:
– K-5 content
– 6-12 content
– 6-12 literacy in history/social studies, science, and technical
subjects
• Organized into four strands: Reading, Writing, Speaking
and Listening, and Language
• 6-12 literacy in history/social studies, science, and
technical subjects section is divided into reading and
writing strands
• K-5 standards for literacy in history/social studies,
science, and technical subjects are embedded within
the K-5 content strands.
• Grade-specific standards define end-of-year
expectations
• K-8 standards are grade-specific and 9-12 standards
use two-year bands for flexibility
• The strand-specific College and Career Readiness
(CCR) anchor standards define literacy expectations
for college and workforce readiness
• CCR anchor standards correspond to grade-specific
standards and are also divided into four stands:
Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and
Language.
