UHD 2302: University Seminar in Mathematics
Course description: This course
introduces students to applications of
mathematics in games, sports, and
gambling. Students will engage in critical
thinking in learning mathematical
concepts in basic probability and
statistics, and apply these concepts to
such applications. Topics include an
analysis of popular casino games such as
poker, roulette, craps, and blackjack;
discovering secrets behind other dice
and card games and tricks; deciphering
baseball and football statistics; and
solving combinatorial games and puzzles.
Problem solving and written and oral
communication skills are emphasized
within the context of these topics, as well
as skills and strategies essential for
success in mathematics and other
academic disciplines.
