California High School Exit Exam
Purpose of the CAHSEE
Improve student achievement in
high school
Help ensure that students who
graduate from high school can
demonstrate grade-level
competency in reading, writing,
and mathematics.

Test Content
The CAHSEE consists of two parts:
English-language arts (ELA) 8th – 10th
grade state standards
Mathematics Pre-Algebra – 1st semester
of geometry
Test questions address California content
standards that a student should know
before graduating from high school.

English-Language Arts
Consists of multiple-choice questions (70-80)
as well as a writing task, in which students
are asked to write on a specific topic or in
response to a literary or informational
passage.

Has a reading section and a writing section

Reading Section
Covers vocabulary, informational reading
(technical documents), and literary reading (poetry,
fiction, non-fiction).
This section includes 50 percent literary texts and
50 percent informational texts.
Writing Section
The writing section covers writing strategies, applications,
and conventions.

Mathematics
Addresses state mathematics content
standards through the first part of
Geometry
Includes statistics, data analysis and
probability, number sense, measurement and
geometry (from middle school), algebra and
functions, mathematical reasoning, and
Algebra I.

Mathematics
Students must demonstrate
computational skills and a foundation
in arithmetic, including working with
decimals, fractions, and percentages.
The math part of the exam is
composed entirely of multiple-choice
questions.

Testing Opportunities
All students are required to take the CAHSEE
for the first time in grade ten.
You will take it in March 18 & 192014
Write these dates in your planners!
Students who do not pass one or both parts
of the CAHSEE in grade ten have up to two
opportunities in grade eleven and
opportunities in grade twelve to retake the
parts of the exam not yet passed.

Results
A score of 350 is required to
PASS
A score of 380 is PROFICIENT
