Early Signs of Pregnancy
 Missed period
 A fullness or mild ache in lower abdomen
 Tired, drowsy, faintness
 The need to urinate more often
 Tenderness in breasts
 Nausea (especially in the morning)
Medical Care During Pregnancy
 See a doctor or obstetrician
 Due date: 9 months + 1 week
 Later checkups – once a month for 6 months, 2 visits
a month from 6th-8th months. Then 1 visit a week for
9th month
Discomforts of Pregnancy
 Many go without any discomfort or concerns!
 Some may experience a lot of discomfort, such as:
-Short of breath
-Muscle cramps
-Lower back pain
Nutrition During Pregnancy
Role of Nutrients
 Protein: meat, fish, poultry, eggs, milk, cheese,
beans, tofu and nuts
 Vitamins: folic acid, vitamin A, B, C, D
 Minerals: iron, calcium, phosphorous
 Carbohydrates & Fats: fruits, vegetables, whole-grain
breads and cereals. Most people get enough fat in
their diet, fats should be avoided
The Food Guide Pyramid
 Refer to chart 187 for food guide
 Extra dietary requirements: 7-8 glasses of water,
avoid rich and fried foods, avoid eating too much
Special Diets
 Lactose intolerance: get calcium from yogurt, cottage
cheese, broccoli, kale, tuna, salmon and tofu
 Vegetarians: get protein from eggs, dried beans,
peas, seeds
Weight Gain During Pregnancy
 24-30 pounds
 Refer to chart on pg: 188
 4th – 6th month weight gain important for fetus
 No less than 20 pounds and no more than 35 pounds
