Requirements
Students wishing to receive a SC high
school diploma must:
1. Demonstrate computer
literacy.
2. Pass the South Carolina
Exit Examination (aka
HSAP) prior to
graduation.
3. Complete the
curriculum requirements
that follow.

Computer Requirements
Students must complete one unit of basic computing to prove
computer literacy prior to graduation. Classes that meet this
approval include:

These classes are taught at the ANDERSON V CAREER
CAMPUS. Students usually take these the 10th grade year.

HSAP test
The High School Assessment Program is given to
all students in their second year of high school.
It tests competencies in English (including a
writing assignment) and Math. Students must
pass this test before graduation in order to
receive a diploma.

4 units
Four units of English and Math are required for
graduation. Most students take English I – IV
with some taking English IV at Tri-County
Technical College for dual credit. Most
students will take Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra
2 for their first three Math units. The last one
can be either Pre-Calculus or Probability and
Statistics. Advanced students can take AP
Calculus their senior year. Other students may
opt for the dual credit course of Probability and
Statistics at Tri-County Tech.

3 units
Three Science units are required for graduation.
One of these must be in Physical Science
which you may take your 9th or 10th grade year.
Most students also take Biology 1 and
Chemistry. You may also take Environmental
Science, Physics, AP Biology 2, or Anatomy
and Physiology.

Students must have three units of Social Studies.
One of them must be US History and
Constitution which is taken in the 11th grade.
You must also take American Government and
Economics, a 12th grade class. Other choices
for the third unit are World Geography or World
History.

• Foreign language or Career and Technology
Education class. For student in a College Prep program to
meet state high school diploma requirements, one unit must be
earned in foreign language (most four-year colleges/universities
require at least two years of the same foreign language).

Grade Classification
• 9th Grade: A student entering high school for the first
time is considered a ninth grader.
• 10th Grade: To be classified as a sophomore, a student
must have earned a minimum of 5 units of credit,
including 1Math, 1 English, 1 Science and 2 additional
units.
• 11th Grade: In order for a student to be a member of the
junior class, he/she must have successfully completed 11
units, including 2 English, 2 Math, 1 Science and 6
additional units.
• 12th Grade: Sixteen credits must be earned to be
classified as a senior. These include 3 English units, 3
math units, 2 science units, and 8 additional units.
