What is new?
(Oct 2013)
• All students without a grade C or above will continue to study
mathematics post-16.
• The new core maths qualifications will suit students who achieve a B
or C in GCSE maths - usually around 50% of pupils every year, the vast
majority of whom currently drop the subject afterwards. It will also
be available for those with an A* and A grade who are not taking A
or AS level maths
• The new mathematics GCSE will demand deeper and broader
mathematical understanding. It will provide all students with greater
coverage of key areas such as ratio, proportion and rates of change
and require them to apply their knowledge and reasoning to provide
clear mathematical arguments.

final grade
• Foundation Tier grades C-G available

• 100 marks on each paper
• The functional elements of mathematics are
assessed on each paper:
-30-40% of the Foundation
-20-30% of the Higher

• Greater examination time than the current
GCSE.
• Tiered exam papers:
-the foundation tier will cover grades 1-5
-the higher tier will cover grades 4-9.

which may require multi-step solutions.
