Who is a Database Administrator?
A database administrator (DBA) is
responsible for the performance,
integrity and security of a database. A
DBA works mostly with software.

• The work of a database administrator
(DBA) varies according to the nature of the
employing organization and the level of
responsibility associated with the post.
The work may be pure maintenance or it
may also involve specializing in database
development.

Functions include:
• establishing the needs of users and monitoring
user access and security
• further refining the ‘physical design’ to meet
system storage requirements
• installing and testing new versions of the
database management system (DBMS)
• ensuring that storage, archiving, backup and
recovery procedures are functioning correctly
• communicating regularly with technical,
applications and operational staff to ensure
database integrity and security
• commissioning and installing new applications.

Qualifications
Although this area of work is open to all graduates, the
following degree subjects may improve your chances:
– computer science;
– software engineering;
– information technology;
– mathematics;
– operational research;
– electronics;
– computer engineering.

A DBA should show:
communication, teamwork and negotiation
skills
problem-solving and good analytical skills
familiarity with the main data manipulation
languages and the principles of database
design
good organizational skills
business awareness and understanding of
business requirements of IT

Most training will be provided on the job. It
is likely to be technical in nature to ensure
that you are up to speed with software
developments. I is usually supplemented
by short, internal or external courses as
appropriate. Career progression will be
helped by taking additional courses,
especially in the market-leading
technologies, such as Oracle and
Microsoft?? . Automated database
generation systems are on the increase.

• Working hours typically include regular unsocial
hours. Overnight and weekend work is often
necessary
• The working environment is informal and it is
possible for work to be carried out from home
• Travel and absence from home at night may
occasionally be required.
• The work can be demanding as organizations
depend on effective databases and there can be
significant pressure to ensure that they operate
smoothly, particularly if databases are accessed
online.
