Concept
Website Environment
{display, interaction}
CERIF Database Environment
{formal syntax, declared semantics
therefore integrity in
maintenance, update, development}
euroCRIS repository
{full text / media documents}
Advantages
• CERIF structure makes it possible to
integrate DRIS and Best Practice
• Also plan to integrate the repository of full
text euroCRIS documents and
presentations from euroCRIS events
Why CERIF data driven website
• The database records formally the
structure, content and meaning of the
research information
– This cannot be done in a web (even semantic
web) environment
• The web presents the information in an
easy-to-understand structure
– This cannot be done easily in a pure database
environment
The database / web relationship
• Content: database binary content displayed in
textual (or other data type) form in web
• Syntax: database structure represented in web
in two ways:
– Internal table structure as rows and columns
– Inter-table structure as hyperlinks (but without
semantics)
• Semantics: interpreted through database
semantic layer and displayed in web
environment according to end-user environment
preference
Why CERIF data driven website
• Data feed has formal syntax and declared
semantics
– Accurate representation of structure and meaning
• Data feed from an integrity controlled database
environment
– Improved quality
– Unambiguous presentation
• Data feed is normalised
– avoids multiple update problem
Timescale
• Plan to have prototype by January 2010
• Plan to have production system March
2010
• Ready for CRIS2010 information –
registration etc
