Electronic
Communication
• in an electronic communication
system the channel carries an
electronic or electromagnetic signal.
• Electricity and electronics have
greatly changed communication
technology.
• The telephone is the most
commonly used form of electronic
communication.
• A number of computers or computer
devices joined together is called a
network.
What is Electronic
Communication?
• If the channel uses electrical energy
to carry the message, it is said to be
an electronic communication
system.
• Electronic communication has
created the information age, much
as steam engines brought about the
industrial age.
• In electronic communication
systems, the message can be sent
threw cables as in a telephone
system.
• System that store messages
electronically are called recording
systems.
The Telegraph
• The first electronic communication
system to be widely used was the
telegraph.
• During the first half of the 1800’s,
telagraph systems were set up in
europe and the united states.
• The sounds were a code for letters.
• In 1858, the first telegraph cable was
laid across the atlantic ocean from
england to america.
The Telephone
• There are over 150 million
telephones in the united states
today.
• That makes the telephone the most
commonly used formof electronic
communication.
• A telephone mouthpiece contains
tiny carbon grains
• Electricity flows through the
telephone earpiece on the receiving
end.
Radio
• During the mid-1800’s , James
Maxwells a scottish physicist ,
showed on paper that it was
possible to send signals to other
places through the air.
• The first truly long distance radio
transmission took place on
December 12 , 1901 , in a deserted
old hospital building in
newfoundland
• Ships were the first to use radio
communication.
• Wires were no longer needed to
send messages.
Television
• In television an image is changed
into electrical signals.
• The signals travel across a distance.
• They are changed back into an image
on the screen
• The television camera is in the
transmitter part of the system the
camera changes the scene into
electronical sygnals(video).
Microwave
Communication
• Fm and am radio , tv , microwave
radio and fiberopic communication
are alike in one way.
• They all use electromagnetic waves
to send a message from the
transmitter to the reciever.
• All occur to a different frequencies.
• They are used to sen tvsygnals to
remote places.
Satellite
Communication
• Satellite communication is important
in bringing the people of different
countries together.
• Communication satellites are radio
relay stations , called repeaters.
• They orbit high above the earth.
• They are housed in space vehicles
that must be sent into space to orbit
the earth.
Fiber Optic
Communication
• Telephone switches are connected
by wires that are many miles long.
• These wired run underground or are
strung on the telephone poles.
Because of the many conversation
poles.
• More and more telephone and data
networks now use light to carry
information.
• A very bright light source that can be
controlled is needed for a
transmitter in fiber optic system.

• Data communication is a
communication between computers
or between a computer and another
device.
• During the early years of the
computer most data comunication is
called centralized computing
because all processing is done by a
central computer
• Todays computers are smaller less
costly and more powerful.
• This argument is called distributed
computing.
Computer Codes
• Computer and other digital
equipment send messages back and
forth using codes.
• In digital codes a group of bits
stands for the letter number or
punctuation mark.
• When a computer that uses ASCII
has to communicate with one that
uses EBCDIC.
• Characters are generally five to eight
bits ong.
Modems
• Telephone lines are often used to
carry data communication.
• Digital equipment cannot be directly
used.
• A computer can be connected to
each other using modems and
telephone lines.
• Many people use modems to reach
electronic bulletin board services.
Data Networks
• A number of computers or computer
devices joined together is called a
network.
• Local area networks they allow small
computers throughout an office to
share data.
• Computers can also share a printer, a
modem, or a large amount of
memory.
• Office automation is used to
describe the use of computers and
communications in the office.
WEB 2.0
(internet)
• Web 2.0 is the term given to
describe a second generation of the
world wide web that is focused on
the ability for people to share
information online
• Over time Web 2.0 has been used
more as a marketing term than a
computer-science-based term.
Blogs, wikis, and Web services are all
seen as components of Web 2.0
• Web 2.0 was previously used as a
synonym for Semantic Web, but
while the two are similar, they do
not share precisely the same
meaning.

Email
• Electronic mail, commonly known as
email or e-mail, is a method of
exchanging digital messages from an
author to one or more recipients.
• Some early email systems required
that the author and the recipient
both be online at the same time, in
common with instant messaging.
• An email message consists of three
components, the message envelope,
the message header, and the
message body.
Cell phones
• A mobile phone (also known as a
cellular phone, cell phone and a
hand phone) is a device that can
make and receive telephone calls
over a radio link whilst moving
around a wide geographic area.
• In addition to modern mobile
phones also support a wide variety
of other services such as text
messaging, email, Internet access,
short-range wireless
communications business
applications, gaming and
photography.
How do cell
phones work?
• Inside your cell phone, there is a
compact speaker, a microphone, a
keyboard, a display screen, and a
powerful circuit board with
microprocessors that make each
phone a miniature computer.
• mobile phones need to have
relatively compact antennas and use
a small amount of power.
• mobile phones can send a signal
over only a very short range, just like
a walkie-talkie.

and Apps
• A Smartphone is a mobile phone
built on a mobile computing
platform, with more advanced
computing ability and connectivity
than a feature phone.
• Today's models also serve to
combine the functions of portable
media players, low-end compact
digital cameras, pocket video
cameras, and GPS navigation units.
Blue tooth and
Blue ray
• Bluetooth is a proprietary open
wireless technology standard for
exchanging data over short distances
from fixed and mobile devices,
creating personal area networks
(PANs) with high levels of security.
• Blu-ray Disc is an optical disc storage
medium designed to supersede the
DVD format. The plastic disc is
120 mm in diameter and 1.2 mm
thick, the same size as DVDs and
CDs.
Text messaging
• Text messaging, or texting, refers to
the exchange of brief written text
messages between two mobile
phones or fixed or portable devices
over a network.
• Text messages can be used to interact with
automated systems such as ordering
products and services for mobile phones or
participating in contests. Advertisers and
service providers use direct text marketing
to notify mobile phone users about
promotions, payment due dates and other
notifications that can usually be sent by
post, e-mail or voicemail.
• text messaging by phones or mobile phones
should include all 26 letters of the alphabet
and 10 numerals, i.e., alpha-numeric
messages, or text, to be sent by texter or
received by the textee.
