Understanding NV comm.
• Nonverbal Communication: a system of symbolic behaviors
that includes all form of communication except words.
• Wave= goodbye, hello, go ahead, I’m over here
• How are you communicating with the people around you
when you don’t talk?
• Some nonverbal comm. Reinforces the spoken message. If
you were meeting someone for the first time, how could you
greet the person in a way that shows you are friendly?
• Some nonverbal comm. Contradicts the spoken message.
What would be a nonverbal clue that someone is lying to you?
• Some nonverbal comm. Substitutes for a spoken message.
What is one way to say hello without speaking?

• Subconcious- unaware
• Contextual- depends on the situation
• Ambiguous- open to interpretation and often confusing
Why are some forms of NV Comm considered ambiguous?
• Cultural- not the same in all languages/environments
Types of NV Comm.
• How is the voice a form of nonverbal communication?

Pitch- highness or lowness of sound on a musical scale
Volume-loudness or softness
Tone- specific vocal quality
Duration- how fast/slow you speak
• How can a pleasant speaking voice be beneficial?
Body Talk as NV Comm.
• Why is your personal appearance an important part of your
nonverbal communication?
• How can having good posture produce a positive image?
• Gesture- a movement of any part of the body that reinforces
another message or acts as a substitute for speech.
• Movement- generally refers to the way you walk from one
place to another.
• Facial Communication- facial expressions
Space and Distance
• Intimate- up to 18 inches from your body
• Personal- 18 inches to 4 feet from the body
• Social- 4 feet to 12 feet
• Public- 12 feet to 25 feet
Time Communication
• Time management- how you use your time reflects your
priorities and sends messages about your effectiveness as a
student, employee, and a communicator.
Environmental Cues
• Artifacts- articles of adornment you use to decorate yourself
or your surroundings.
• Ex: clothing, pictures on the walls, posters, books
