TOPIC:COMMUNICATION SKILL
INTRODUCTION
Communication is universal. The ability of two persons to
communicate clearly with each other is a significant part
of any successful relationship, whether a friendship,
relationship on the job, or intimate relationship between
life partners. Communication is much more than words:
it is tone of voice, gestures, timing, and emphasis.
DEFINING COMMUNICATION
 The word communication comes from the Latin word
communicare which means to share,to impart,to partake.
 Communication may be defined as the process of passing
information and understanding from one person to
another.
 According to W.H.Newman and C.E.Summer,
“Communication is an exchange of facts, ideas, opinions
or emotions by two or more persons.”
The communication process
•
Communication is a process by which a message is transmitted from a sender to the receiver through
media and a feedback is receive. It is often said, “Learning to communicate and getting along well with
others is one important key to happiness.”

1) Sender- The communication process begins with the sender. The sender wishes to send a
message to the receiver.
2) Message- The message is what the sender wants to convey to the receiver.
3) Encoding- Encoding is putting a message into words or images.
4) Transmission- Channel: The channel is the medium of transmission from one person to
another.(They could be telephone, radio, television, newsletter, personal letter, post card,
questionaire, articles etc.)
5) Receiver- The receiver is the person or group for whom the communication effort is intended.
6) Decoding- Decoding is the process by which the receiver interprets the message and translates
it into meaningful information.
7) Feedback- Feedback is the response or reaction; without it, the sender of the message cannot
know whether the recipient has received the entire message.
8) Noise- Noise is the disturbance that reduces or confuses the clarity or quality of the message
being transmitted.
PRINCIPLE OF GOOD
COMMUNICATION
Good communication with almost anyone Parents, children, husband, wife, boss,
employees, colleagues, companions or friends-depends on a few basic principles of
people handling.
1.
Honesty: Good communication is build on mutual respect, and respect depends on
honesty.
2.
Wisdom: Wisdom means that a person knows what to say and how to act in different
situation.
3.
Love: When people feel loved or cared for, it puts everything else in proper perspective.
4.
Positiveness: Being upbeat usually elicits a positive response. Encouragement and sincere
compliments are always appreciated.
5.
Sensitivity: It’s not good to be show sensitive to own needs that your feelings are easily
hurt, but it is good to be sensitive to others’ likes or dislikes, needs, and moods.
6. Open mindedness: People’s opinions and the way they approach problems are as different as
the people themselves. People will be much more at ease withyou and more likely to turn to
you for advice if they know will be open to what they have to say, even if you don’t agree
.
7.Empathy:Put yourself in the other person’s position, and try to understand the feelings that are
behind what he or she is saying.
8.A sense of humour:A little laughter can be just the thing to keep potentially difficult
exchanges from getting too intense.
9.Effort:Sometimes communicating is plain hardwork-but the rewards are worth it!
10.Consistency:People who communicate regularly understand each other better and are more
likely to be able to work through problem when they come up.
BARRIERS TO COMMUNICATIION
Though the process of communication appears to be simple, it is not so in reality. Because of
the complexities of the persons involved, communication cannot be complete and
perfect. There are some barriers which make communication incomplete, unforceful,
ineffective and imperfect.

BACKGROUND BARRIERS:
In an ordinary classroom the learners will be different
in nature. They have differences in their family and social
background, experience, previous knowledge IQ level,
attitude towards the topic, cultural disparities etc.
 LANGUAGE BARRIERS:
Language other than the mother tongue is
very likely to create problem for the learner.
Language barriers also includes Verbalism,
unclear graphics and symbols.
PHYSICAL BARRIERS
Noise, invisibility and poor audibility, environmental and physical discomfort,
distortions and ill health. Noise means any sort of distraction that might
arise from the surrounding which can disturb the communication process.
LACK OF KNOWLEDGE
On the part of the leader in handling modern means of communication is a
barrier. For example the leader may not know how to handle and operate a
laptop or a projector.
INATTENTION
Many students do not pay attention to the message .One reason people do
not pay attention is due to selective listening. Selective listening results
from a tendency to block out information that conflicts with what we
believe.
PSYCHOLOGICAL BARRIERS
This include prejudices, lack of interest, anxiety unrewarding experiences
etc. Many a message has been lost, not because there was any thing wrong
with it; but because the hearers may have a prejudiced mind.
COMMUNICATING WITH YOUR HEART
John Maxwell says: ‘To handle yourself, use your head. To handle others, use your
heart.’ In communication , emotion is a vital key. Use your heart, not just your head,
and you will influence others for good.
Communication with the heart means using words carefully. Our words should build
others up, not pull them down. Our words should inspire them for the future, not
deflate and drag them back into the past. Our words should be timely, not hurried.
CONCLUSION
Thus the ability of two persons to communicate
clearly with each other is a significant part of any
successful relationship, whether a friendship ,
relationship on the job, or intimate relationships
between life partners. Communication is much more
than words: it is the tone of voice , gestures, timing
and tact; it is surrender of oneself to the other in
humility; it is being empathetic, sincere and open to
other’s feelings; it is acceptance of another’s
individuality and uniqueness. It is indeed the secret to
happiness.
“Skill in the art of communication is crucial to a leader’s success.
He can accomplish nothing unless he can communicate
effectively.”- Norman Allen .
