Why We Communicate
Enabling Grids for E-sciencE
• We communicate for many reasons, for instance to…
– let your project/institute know what you are doing
– publicise your group/institute/project to the outside world
– facilitate uptake of our results by business/industry and other
groups
– demonstrate work to funding bodies and help ensure your
continued funding!
• For EU funded projects, communication (often called
dissemination) is an obligation
– EU funding is provided to help us create knowledge, but also to
make sure it is used by others
– for this we must tell others what we are doing!

But I have ‘real’ work to do…
Enabling Grids for E-sciencE
• “But I need to get back to my coding”
– Communications people understand this – They are actually
trying to help!
– Your communications people are there so you don’t have to deal
with too much of this
 But they do need your help to do so
 They will help minimize the effort you have to put in
• They help make sure you can get back to your ‘core’
work as quickly as possible

The media
Enabling Grids for E-sciencE
• Communication staff can help deal with the media
– they are often from a technical background as well
– Will ‘speak your language’
• The media work in a very different way the scientific community
– Short deadlines, specific areas of interest, etc.
• Speaking to the media is as important as speaking to people in
your community, in business etc.
– It raises your profile wit a wide audience, helps you get funding etc
• But to be able to deal with the media you need to understand
them...
– That is what this session should help you with

Conclusions
Enabling Grids for E-sciencE
• Communication is necessary, if time consuming
• Communication efforts help you in the long term
• Dealing with the media is a special case of this, as they
have very specific interests and demands
• This session is to help you better understand the
media, and help make sure they understand you too
