Notes
Many people believe that ASL is English
conveyed into signs. ASL has its own distinct
grammatical structure and must be mastered in
the same way as the grammar of any other
language.
Deaf Culture Values and Norms
Talking without signing in the presence of a Deaf instructor or any Deaf person
is considered rude in Deaf culture.
There is certain etiquette for getting someones attention and walking through
signed conversations.
Have a positive attitude about being Deaf.
Welcome those who are hearing capable to learn and communicate with them.
Known to be more direct or blunt then their hearing counterparts.
Keep people informed with what is going on with detailed information.
Due to the small population of the deaf community, they ask many personal
questions in order to search for connections with one another.
American Sign Language is:
Rule Guided
Reflects Culture
Intentional
The use of Sign Language is not as you might think,
restricted to people who are Deaf or have hearing
disabilities. Sign Language is a natural extension or
type of nonverbal communication.
