The Telephone
Then and Now
First Phone
•Alexander Graham
Bell invented the first
telephone in in 1876.
Telephone
•Bell started the American
Company
Telephone and Telegraph
CO. It was called the Bell
system.
•Later the Bell American
Telephone and Telegraph
became what we now
know as AT&T.
Phones Improve Communication
• By the 1920’s 35% of the
households in America had phones.
• The telephone speeded up
communication.
• People could call a person within
minutes, rather than waiting days for
a letter to arrive.
Smart Phones
•Bell’s phones were
different than the ones
we use today.
•We still talk with people
on the phone but
smart phones have
changed the way people
communicate.
Conversations
•Now conversations on
smart phones have video
chats, so you can connect to
your family/friends from your
phone and see what is
happening
•A new way people
communicate on phones is
by texting.
Apps.
• Smart phones have
applications you can
download like: Facebook,
Twitter, Youtube, games,
and songs.
• GPS is an important App,
which allows a person to
put an address in a phone
and get directions to find a
place
Kids and Teenagers
• The biggest users of
smart phones are
kids and teenagers
• Teens use smart
phones to text, or go
on Facebook,
Twitter, or chat
websites
• Little kids use smart
phones to play
games
Distractions
•People driving get
distracted when they are
using their smart phones
and they don’t pay
attention to the road.
•Students use their smart
phones in class and they
get distracted too and don’t
pay attention.
• Phones have helped people improve
communication since the first telephone
was invented by Alexander Graham
Bell.
• Today’s smart phones do so many
useful and fun things, but each new
invention brings new problems, too.
