Standard
• A standard is a measure of what a thing should
be, a benchmark, a yardstick.
• It is a rule or principle used in judgement.
• Purpose of a standard is to provide specific
guidance on conduct, performance and
discipline.

Barriers to Communication
• No common core of experience - Words will have
different meanings without the same experience.
• Confusion between the symbol and the thing being
symbolized - Words are symbols used to express
meaning to a message.
• Misuse of abstractions - Without the same experience,
abstract words may inaccurately describe the specific
experience you meant.

Facts of Communication
Words sometimes do not fit the fact of communication.
Three facts that influence our language usage are:
• Fact of complexity - A word simply does not convey
all of its meaning.
• Fact of change - Words have a tendency over time to
change meaning.
• Fact of differences - Words are used for similarities,
when they have difference meanings.
