Organizational Communication
Lecture 1a
WELCOME!
• WE STUDY ORGANIZATIONS BECAUSE WE
SPEND MOST OF OUR LIVES IN THEM.
• ORGANIZATIONS ARE THE PRODUCTS OF
HUMAN COMMUNICATION AND ONCE
CREATED, THEY SHAPE HOW WE TALK AND
WITH WHOM WE TALK.
• KNOWING HOW THEY WORK AND HOW WE
CAN WORK WITHIN THEM IS ESSENTIAL FOR
A SUCCESSFUL LIFE.
• WE WILL BEGIN WITH
– A SHORT REVIEW OF A VERY BASIC MODEL OF IP
COMMUNICATION
– FOCUS ON THE TYPE AND FUNCTIONS OF
COMMUNICATION IN ORGANIZATIONS
• WHAT FUNCTIONS DOES COMMUNICATION – OF WHATEVER
TYPE – SERVE IN ORGANIZING?
– REVIEW HOW COMMUNICATION TYPES CHANGE AS
ORGANIZATIONS GROW – FROM
• PURELY FACE-TO-FACE TALK – MUTUAL ADJUSTMENT – TO
• AN EMPHASIS ON WRITTEN DOCUMENTS – TEXT ON PAGE
AND NOW TEXT ON SCREEN.
• ALSO WE WILL KEEP COMING BACK TO THE PROBLEM OF
COMMUNICATION OVERLOAD – TOO MUCH INFORMATION AND HOW ORGANIZATIONS DEAL WITH THIS. HOW THEY
CHANGE.
