is Interactive
Individuals TALK to one another
Individuals LISTEN to one another
Individuals use NON VERBAL
behaviors to communicate feelings and
meanings.
Energy and meaning are exchanged
Meaning in communication
Includes thoughts, ideas and
understandings that are created,
exchanged and shared by
communicators.
Symbols in Communication
Stands for an idea or a feeling.
Symbolic interaction means that we
rely on words (written and oral) and
nonverbal behaviors such as gestures,
eye contact, and facial expressions to
communicate meanings and feelings.

Components follow specific sequence
and are continuous and circular in
nature.

Process
Context- provides the people, the occasion, and the task
Physical Environment- Influences the quality of interaction
within a physical space
Climate-Influence the emotional, attitudinal, and intellectual
tone of the communication
Communicator- Creates meaning, sends and receives
messages, and exchanges meaning
Message- Conveys meaning, feeling, and various kinds of
energy from sender-receiver to receiver-sender
Channel- Provides the space through which the message
must pass; determines the method used to send the message

Noise- Interferes or disrupts communication
Barrier- Blocks communication
Feedback
- Assures the sender-receiver the
communication has occurred
-Allows the receiver-sender to adjust or modify
a message
-Provides insight into the sender-receiver’s
communication
Sender-Receiver
Is the person who sends the message to
someone. At the same time the
message is being sent, the senderreceiver is receiving and processing
feedback from the receiver-sender.
Receiver-Sender
Is the person who receives, or believes
he or she has received, a message.
Receiver-sender obtains a provides
feedback at the same time.
Message
Message- is the information that is
exchanged between communicators.
Every message is open to
interpretation or misinterpretation.
Types of messages- intentional,
unintentional, actual
Messages
Intentional Message- is made up of the
meanings and feelings on person wishes to
send to another.
Unintentional Message- is one that
sender-receiver either does not mean to
send or is unaware of sending.
Actual Message- is the message receiversender receives. It is what he/she thinks the
speaker is actually saying.
