LCSC06 Biosciences for Speech
and Language Therapy
Structure of the Module
• Timetabled for one 3 hour session per week…
• Over 2 semesters
• You should aim to spend at least an equivalent time studying
on your own (directed study v self-directed study), especially
if new to biosciences

Anatomy
• The study of the STRUCTURE OF AN
ORGANISM
• Familiarise yourself with the different
specialisms and areas of study in anatomy see page 2 in Seikel et al (2010)
Physiology
• The study of the FUNCTION of a living
organism and its parts
• Underpinning knowledge:
• An understanding of the chemical processes
occurring in the body

Small group activity
• Think of someone you have met on your visits on
in your personal life, who has had a condition
that has affected their communication.
• Consider the ICF framework for this person –how
has this condition affected them across the
domains of the ICF?
• How might a knowledge of the medical aspects
inform our understanding of the person and their
communication disorder?
From the point of view of communication,
we study the biosciences in order to:
• Understand the conditions that our clients
present with, from a biological and therefore
MEDICAL point of view
• Understand the underpinning PATHOLOGY
• and how this impacts on COMMUNICATION
• Aids our DIAGNOSIS, informs PROGNOSIS
• Help us to understand how MEDICATION
works and impacts on the client’s condition
Other reasons for studying the
biosciences
• Easy access to information means that clients can
be very knowledgeable about their own
conditions
• SLTs can work within a medical framework (as
opposed to an educational framework)
• SLTs work in multi-professional teams and hence
with a large number of other health
professionals: a shared understanding of the
biosciences and medical aspects enhances this
team working
Expectations and studying at
University
• You read to get a degree
• The lectures set the scene and the scope,
provide framework for this further reading
• Use the lectures as an opportunity to ask
questions
• If you think of a question after the lecture, use
the discussion board on LS

• It is worthwhile buying at least ONE textbook for
each of your modules.
• Many resources are available on-line and there
are Apps available to help with your studies
• Don’t keep any useful resources to yourselves!

Learning Outcomes for LCSC06:As
outcomes of this module students should:
1.
Demonstrate an understanding of the
anatomical structures relevant to speech
2.
Demonstrate an understanding of the physical
and physiological processes which underpin the
function and control of the body systems most
closely associated with speech and language
therapy.
3.
Apply a knowledge and understanding of the
underlying biophysical sciences to selected
examples of speech, language and hearing
disorders.
ASSESSMENT for LCSC06
• ONE exam, in two parts
• Two x 2 hour exams, one per
semester
• Each comprises 50% of the module
• In Exam weeks, scheduled by
Registry
• Results posted on LS by Registry
