Ming Dynasty
Chinese Exploration
Ming Dynasty
• Mongol (Yuan) Dynasty overthrown in 1368 by
the Ming Dynasty
• Under Ming rule China expanded into Mongolia,
central Asia, and briefly to Vietnam
• Founded by Emperor Hongwu who ruled from 1368
until 1398
• Early on in the Ming Dynasty a strong central
government was recreated
Ming Dynasty
• Renovated the Grand Canal so grain could
be shipped from southern to northern
China
• New crops increased food production and
allowed for population growth
• These combined factors helped the Ming
establish itself as a powerful regional force
Ming Dynasty
• During the Ming
Dynasty the Great
Wall of China was
also greatly
expanded
• Most of what we
now think of as the
Great Wall of
China was
constructed during
the Ming Dynasty
The Great Wall
•Origins before 4th century BCE, ruins from Qin
dynasty in 3rd century BCE
•Rebuilt under Ming rule, 15th-16th centuries
•1,550 miles, 33-49 feet high
–Guard towers
–Room for housing soldiers
Ming Dynasty
• After tension and in fighting in the early years
of the Ming Dynasty Yongle Emperor (Zhu Di)
moved the capital of the Emperor to Beijing
• He constructed a palace that would become
known as the Forbidden City from 1406-1420
• The Forbidden City would serve as the center
of Chinese government until the mid-1900’s
The Forbidden City
Ming Dynasty
• The Ming Dynasty brought back the merit based
bureaucracy of earlier dynasties
• As with previous dynasties there was a civil
service exam based largely on Confucianism that
was required
• The Ming Dynasty is noted for implementing a
much harder civil service exam than previous
dynasties
Ming Dynasty
• Ming emperors encourage abandonment of
Mongol names, dress, and cultural practices
• The government also helped encourage the study
of Confucian classics
• This was all part of an attempt to remove any
remaining influence and legacy of the past
Mongol rule
Chinese Exploration
• Goals of Chinese
exploration:
– Enroll distant peoples
and states in the Chinese
tribute system
– Bring back exotic goods
from foreign lands (ex:
zebras, giraffes, etc.)
– Establish Chinese power
and prestige in the
Indian Ocean
– Exert Chinese control
over foreign trade
Chinese Exploration
• China undertook large
and impressive
maritime expeditions
• Largest voyages were
led by Zheng He
– 300 ships; 27,000
crew members;
variety of different
people on board
• He made 7 voyages
between 1405 and
1433
Voyages of Zheng He
Compare Zheng Ho’s ship to Columbus’
ship.
Chinese Exploration
• Some in China saw merchants as
lowly and condemned Zheng He’s
commercial ventures
• Shortly after the Yongle emperor died,
his voyages were halted
• Some speculate that Zheng He could
have reached the Americas if he had
been allowed to continue his voyages
Chinese Exploration
• After the death of the Yongle Emperor Ming
China became more concerned with steppe
nomads and ceased funding shipbuilding and
expeditions
• Funding was redirected to the construction of the
Great Wall to help defend the empire
• China also began a policy of isolation towards the
ends of the Ming Dynasty that would become
much stronger in years to come
