China’s Exploration
Voyages of Zheng He
• Yongle pushed the idea of China
being known around the world
• He wanted to win tribute from
other countries
• Yongle sent a series of maritime
expeditions
• 7 long voyages from (1405-1433)
• Zheng He led the fleet
– 300 ships
– 28,000 crew members
– Sailed to India, Arabia & Africa
Change in Government Policy
• After Yongle and Zheng He died, many felt
that the voyages brought little gain to China
• China was concerned with threats of invasion
from Central Asia
• Ming government ended all maritime voyages
• China did however continue to trade with
European ships

• Ming Dynasty began to decline due to high taxes
and poor crop harvest led to rebellion
• People in an area northeast of China (Manchuria)
began to invade the Ming
• After defeating the Ming, they started their own
dynasty known as the Qing Dynasty
• Limited foreign contact with other parts of the
world
• Qing Dynasty ended in 1911
