translates to “the way”. It stresses
following nature.

according to this philosophy.
Therefore we need rewards and
punishments to control society.

eight-fold path for those who believe
in this philosophy and religion.

This is the “first noble truth”.

This was the final Chinese dynasty.
It ended in 1911.

During this dynasty China stopped
its voyages of exploration. They felt
there was no need to see what the
barbarians where doing.
What is the Ming dynasty?
This dynasty made major additions
to the Great Wall. It worked for a
couple of hundred years!

This dynasty built of system of roads
that helped connect all of China’s
provinces to its capital in Beijing.

During this dynasty the Chinese built
large ships (larger than the
Europeans’ of the day) that made it
all the way to Africa.

lasted from 1279 to 1368.

They forbid their people from
marrying the Chinese and forced

Communist forces.

This system grants government jobs
based upon tested ability, not birth
right.
What is the civil service system?
This group was treated more fairly
by the Communists during the
China’s long years of civil war.
This, and other reasons, made them
more likely to support the
Communists.
Who are the peasants?
This empire was among the first to
pay for its porcelain and silk with
opium from its colonies in India.

As one of the terms of the Treaty of
Nanjing, China was forced to give
up this island. China didn’t get it
back until 2000.

Western powers gained these regions
of economic privileges in China.
They were able to build railroads
and factories and skip paying taxes
on the goods they produced and
traded.
What are spheres of influence?
Westerners also claimed this right in
China. It allowed Europeans
accused of crimes in China to be
tried in their home country.
What is extraterritoriality?
Toward the end of the 19th century,
the United States wanted this policy
for China. It would give everyone
equal access to Chinese markets. In
reality, the US just wanted to protect
being blocked out by the Europeans
who were on the verge of colonizing
China. Knock knock.

This rebellion in 1900 attempted to
rid China of foreign influence. It
didn’t stand a fighting chance.
What is the Boxer rebellion?
China declared itself this in 1911. It
gives the people the power to choose
its leaders.
What is a republic?
His three principles of the people
included nationalism, democracy,
and “livelihood” or a decent living
for all. Not so easy after thousand of
years under a dynastic system.

Mao Zedong led the Communists
during this 6000 mile retreat.
What is the Long March?
This general led the Nationalists
(Guomindang) during China’s
civil war.
