East Asian Isolation
• First the Portuguese, and later the Dutch and English,
established trade in Asia. Both the Dutch and English
formed “East India Companies”.
• They were much less successful in China and Japan……

• In 1368 Hongwu drove out Mongol invaders and
established the Ming dynasty (1368-1644)
• His son Yonglo replaced him in 1398.

voyages led by the
famous admiral Zheng
He.
• The voyages were
massive. Some voyages
had over 27000
members.
• These voyages led to
increased prestige for
China and contributed to
European interest in
China.

• The Ming attempted to restrict foreign trade
• Christian missionaries such as Matteo Ricci
attempted to spread Christianity in Asia
• In 1644 the Manchu people invaded and
established the Qing Dynasty.

• Japan enters the “Warring States” period (14671568)
• Japan’s feudal system was much like European
feudalism

• Oda Nobunaga defeats many rival daimyo but is
unable to unify Japan
• Nobunaga’s best general Toyotomi Hideyoshi
continues the conquest
• One of Hideyoshi’s allies, Tokugawa Ieyasu,
completes the unification of Japan

• Tokugawa becomes Shogun of all of Japan
(1600)and he moves the capital to Edo, which later
becomes Tokyo. This is known as the Tokugawa
Shogunate, and lasted until 1867.
