ANCIENT MUSIC
HORNS AND STRINGS
• Beginning around 15,000 BC, instrumentation and music would start to develop in more advanced
forms.

The development of trumpet-like instruments would begin with ‘voice-enhancers’.

Examples: the Aboriginal didgeridoo and the conch shells and animal horns.

The musical bow is used as a main instrument in Africa and the earliest depictions of it remain in Africa.
BRASS INSTRUMENTS
• Following the usage of conch shells and animal horns as blown instruments, the Bronze Age (beginning
at 3,000 BC). The first trumpets can be seen developing around 1,500 BC. These early versions of the
trumpet can be found in China, Egypt, South America, Scandinavia, and Asia.
DRUMS
• The oldest origin of drums (copper) is currently dated back to the Shang Dynasty (1783-1123 BC).
