TREATY OF PARIS (1783): FREEDOM
• The Treaty of Paris
acknowledged the United
States to be a free, sovereign,
and independent nation.
• Historians have often
commented that the treaty
was very generous to the
United States in terms of
greatly enlarged boundaries,
which came at the expense
of the Indian allies of the
British.
THE LOUISIANA PURCHASE
• Napoleon
sold the
Louisiana
territory to
the United
States in
order to
fund his
conquest of
Europe.

• Chance to own land
• Adventure/wealth
• Idea of Manifest Destiny: belief that
God had given the entire continent to
America and it was our destiny to
settle the western lands and to bring
democracy and progress with us!
FARMING NEW LANDS
• Many Americans moved west for the
chance to own their own land.
• However, farming in the west was
extremely difficult due to the terrain.
• In 1837, John Deere engineered a plow
that would cut work labor in half.
• Cyrus McCormick’s reaper (1834)
allowed farmers to harvest far more grain.
• These inventions helped contribute to
westward expansion.
WESTWARD MIGRATION
• Terrain from the edge of the
frontier to the Pacific was
extremely difficult.
• Men like Kit Carson made a
living trapping beavers and
selling fur.
• By the 1840s, mountain men
like Carson had forged out
many east-west trails. One of
the most notable was the
Oregon Trail.
OVERLANDERS
• Emigrants made their
journeys west in groups of
covered wagons known as
wagon trains.
• These “overlanders” found
their way using guidebooks.
• Some parties ended in
disaster such as the Donner
Party.
