to Plains to take over the family’s peanut
farm and cotton gin. He married
Rosalynn also from Plains.

His father had served in the General
Assembly as a state senator. So Jimmy
run for election to the state senate
from the Fourteenth District in 1962.
Once elected, Carter devoted much
time and attention to educational
affairs during his two senate terms.

He hoped consolidation and
reorganization would lead to more
efficiency and more educational
opportunities. However, Georgians
often saw a conflict in these ideas and

south governor to speak out against
segregation and racism. He also worked
to provide more opportunities for
