Americans rebel against the
Mexicans
General Santa Ana marched
with 6,000 troops against
the Americans.

Santa Ana arrived in San Antonio to battle
the Texans
The Texans took over an old mission “The
Alamo”
Santa Ana surrounded the fort and fired cannon
balls at it for 12 days
Then Santa Ana ordered his men to storm
the fort.
The battle raged for 90 minutes and all the
Texans inside the Alamo were dead.

Americans were angry about the
deaths at The Alamo
Sam Houston was the commander of
the Texas revolutionary Army.
He attacked Santa Ana and the Mexican
troops yelling “Remember the Alamo”
The Texans won their independence
from Mexico

Why Oregon
Newspapers reported a “disease free” state
with rich soil, sunny weather, and lots of trees.
Settlers by the thousands headed to
Oregon.
President Polk wanted all of Oregon but he did
not want to start a war with Britain.
A compromise was reached which divided
Oregon in half (along the 49th parallel)

Why Mexican Cession
After the US annexed
Texas, Mexico and Texas
could not agree on
boundary lines.
Mexico fired on
American troops
patrolling the Rio
Grande.

Zachary Taylor invaded
Mexico with 6,000 troops.
General Santa Ana met Taylor
with 20,000 troops.
Both armies were “cut to
pieces” and Santa Ana
retreated.

surrender.

1848 Mexico and the US signed
the treaty of Guadalupe
Hidalgo.
Mexico agreed to give up the
present day states of :
California, Nevada, Utah,
Arizona, New Mexico, parts of
Colorado and Wyoming.
