Federal Agencies Within The Government
I.
The Secret Service (7/5/1865)
A. Their main responsibility is to provide special
protection for the President
II.
B. They also arrest people who forge and try to cash
government checks, bonds, and securities
The United States Coast Guard
A. They are part of the Armed Forces of the United States
1. In times of peace they are part of the Department
of Transportation
2. In times of war or when the President says so
they become part of the Navy
B. Their primary responsibility is the enforcement of federal
laws and treaties on the high seas and waters within the
jurisdiction of the United States
C. Other Duties:
1. Search and rescue
2. Boat safety
3. Pollution control
4. Conservation
5. Port security
III. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (F.B.I.)
A. Early History
1. They gained nation wide attention during the 1930s
2. Their great image was due to J. Edgar Hoover who
was director for 48 years
a. He came up with the Ten Most Wanted list
b. He also came up with the fan club-The
Junior G-Men
c. He was very powerful and generally got
whatever he wanted
B. The F.B.I. and Watergate
1. Hoover died in 1972 just before Watergate
2. L. Patrick Gray took over for Hoover and was
linked to the cover up of Watergate
3. The image of the F.B.I. was tarnished because it
was revealed that they:
a. Committed illegal break-ins
b. Installed bugs
c. Falsified records
d. Opened people’s mail who were under
investigation
e. Harassed members of radical political
groups
C. F.B.I. Guidelines
1. 1976 – Things became regulated
a. They could not get groups to start riots
b. They could not enter buildings illegally
c. They could not openly ridicule anyone
d. They could join groups
e. They could use surveillance equipment
f. They could open the mail of a suspect
-they did however need the approval
from headquarters
