Unrestricted Submarine Warfare
• The American people are divided on who to
support in the war. Officially the US
government will be neutral and will not
support either side.
• England used their Navy to blockade German
ports; in response Germany began a
campaign of unrestricted submarine warfare.
• Any ship
entering the
war zone
around
England
would be
attacked.
• On May 7th 1915, the British passenger
liner Lusitania was sunk by a German Uboat. 1,198 passengers including 128
Americans were killed.
• Another event that will push the U.S. to war was the
Zimmerman Telegram. This was a message from
Germany asking Mexico to attack the United States
in exchange for financial help.
• On April 6th 1917, Congress declared war
on Germany.
