What is citizenship?
• The status of being a citizen, a person who by
birth or naturalization enjoys certain rights
and has certain duties in a nation-state
What is the difference between civic
rights and civic responsibilities?
• Civic rights: U.S. citizens can vote; can hold public
office; can claim certain social and economic
benefits.
• Civic responsibilities: U.S. citizens must obey
laws; must pay taxes; must cooperate with public
officials; must register for military service if they
are 18-year-old males; are expected to be
informed about and participate in public affairs.
How does the 14th Amendment define
citizenship?
• All persons born or naturalized in the United
States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof,
are citizens of the United States and of the
states where in they reside.
Did the 14th A. give slaves citizenship?

• Liberalism is an ideology that favors an active
role for the government in solving society’s
problems
• Favor government regulation to protect the
environment and improve the health care
system
• Want the government to regulate business
and the economy

• Public schools are the best way to educate
students. Vouchers take money away from public
schools. Government should focus additional
funds on existing public schools, raising teacher
salaries and reducing class size.
What is conservatism?
• conservativism: favors a limited role for
government in economic affairs
• Want to reduce taxes and cut back on
government programs
• They expect charities and religious
organizations to deal with society’s problems.
What is socialism?
• socialism: wants to limit economic inequality
by ensuring a fair distribution of wealth
• They want the government to provide
programs such as free public health care
What is libertarianism?
• libertarianism: believes in personal freedom
and minimal government intervention
- Favor lower taxes and free-market economy
- Oppose bans on abortion and gay marriage
What is environmentalism?
• environmentalism: is deeply concerned about
conservation and protection of the environment
- Advocate policies to reduce pollution and
preserve natural resources
