Britain accepted U.S. intervention in the
region, U.S. reinstated the Monroe
Doctrine, & after negotiations in 1899, a
tribunal awarded most of the territory to
British Guiana

• Similarities: Both aimed to preserve the
liberty/freedom of Cubans, both wanted
to rid Cuba of European influence, both

• Difference: Teller Amendment promised
no U.S. annexation and the Platt
Amendment allowed us to occupy Cuba
to preserve liberty. Teller was passed in
the U.S., Platt was an addition to the
Cuban Constitution
