The Lingering Question of Texas
• Texas and Oregon Enter the Union
– President Tyler brings the annexation matter
before the Senate
– The Senate voted against annexation
– The Election of 1844
• Whig Senator Henry Clay
• Democrat James K Polk
– Promised to annex Texas as well as Oregon Territory
– Promised to buy California from Mexico
– Appealed to both sides

• Fifty-Four Forty or Fight – Declared that the united
states should control all of Oregon below the line of
54 40 North Latitude
• Very few Americans wanted to fight the British
• Too busy with other matters so they settled

• February 1845 Texas officially became part of the
United States
• Dispute over the boarder
– Mexico says the Nueces River
– Texas and the United States say the Rio Grande
The War With Mexico
• Polk ordered Zachary Taylor to cross the Nueces
River (wanted Mexico to fire the first shot)
– Polk received word that Mexicans had attacked he
went to Congress saying we were at war
– The Senate and House voted to go to War
– Calling all Volunteers
• 3 Pronged Military Strategy
– Taylor’s troops would move South
– Separate group would capture Santa Fe and march West to
capture California
– US Forces would advance on Mexico City and Force Mexico
to surrender
• 73,000 volunteers

• The Fighting Begins
– Before Polk signed the Declaration of War, Taylor’s
Troops defeated Mexican forces in 3 different
battles
– Stephen Kearny led troops toward Santa Fe
– John Fremont – Began an uprising in California
• Bear Flag Republic – lasted a few weeks

• To Mexico City
– Mexico Refused to Surrender
– General Winfield Scott replaced Taylor
– Americans captured Mexico City and the city officials
surrendered
• Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
– Mexico gave the US more than 500,000 square miles
– Accepted the Rio Grande as the Southern boarder

– The US spread from ocean to ocean
– Will the new lands allow slavery?
