Massachusetts
settlers from France (Canada, Louisiana), Spain

In November 1620, a small ship called the
Mayflower brought a group of Englishmen to
Plymouth, Massachusetts
interested in making a better society, not
looking for gold

A group of colonists dressed as Indians
emptied chests of British tea into the waters

The colonists wished to rule the country by
themselves
On July 4, 1776 people from 13 colonies
agreed to the United States Declaration of
Independence - this said that they were free
and independent states and were not part of
England anymore

elected the first president of the USA

1863 - President Abraham Lincoln gave the
slaves freedom
by 1861, over three million African-Americans
were slaves in the South
they worked for white

The African-Americans faced racism and
segregation

1955, Alabama: Rosa Parks, an African American
woman, refused to give up her seat to a white
man and was arrested

"I Have a Dream" speech (he fought for civil
rights)

of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the
sons of former slave owners will be able to sit

will one day live in a nation where they will not
be judged by the color of their skin but by the
content of their character...
