The Flag of the United
States of America
Stars
And
Stripes
Forever!
Our Flag
• The flag of the United
States today has 13 stripes7 red and 6 white- and 50
white stars on a blue fieldfive rows of 6 and 4 rows of
5.
• The stripes remind us of the
13 colonies that gained us
our liberty. The stars
represent the states that
are bound together into one
country.
The US Flag on
Independence Day, 1776
• The flag of the newly
independent United
States of America, was
first flown on
Independence Day
1776.
• It was called the
Continental Union
flag.
The First Official Flag of the
United States
• On June 14, 1777,
Congress adopted a
new flag.
• This new flag would
have 13 stars, for the
13 colonies, and
thirteen red and white
alternating stripes.
• It was designed by
Francis Hopkinson.
The Betsy Ross Flag
• The Betsy Ross flag is
one of the most famous
of the US flags.
• Betsy Ross’ family
claims that she was
the creator of the first
US flag.
• Both Ross’ and
Hopkinson’s flags are
proud symbols of our
young nation.
The Stars
• On April 4, 1818,
President Monroe
made a law where a
star would be given for
each new state that
came into the union.
• At this point in time
the flag had 20 stars,
and was know as the
Flag of 1818.
Our Flag Today
• The flag that we know
and salute today was
finalized on August 21,
1959, by President
Eisenhower.
• An executive order
signed by him gave the
flag the design that we
see today.

When you pledge allegiance to the flag
you promise loyalty and devotion to
your nation. Each word has a deep
meaning.
I pledge allegiance- I promise to be true
To the flag- to the sign of our country
Of the United States of America- a
country made up of 50 states, each with
certain rights
and to the Republic- a country where
the people elect others to make laws for
them
for which it stands-the flag means the
country
one Nation under God- a single country
whose people believe in a supreme being
indivisible- the country cannot split into
parts
with liberty and justice- with freedom
and fairness
for all- for each person in the country.
I pledge allegiance to
the flag of the United States of
America
and to the Republic for which it
stands,
one Nation under God,
Indivisible, with liberty and
Justice for all.
A Poem Taught To American
Children Almost 100 Years Ago
I
O Flag of our Union
O flag of our Union,
To you we'll be true,
To your red and white stripes,
And your stars on the blue;
The emblem of freedom,
The symbol of right,
We children salute you,
O flag fair and bright!
