Making it Alone
Brainstorm:
If you move out
on your own, and are having
trouble making it aloneWhat are your options?
Possible Options
 Move
Back Home
 Cut expenses and try to survive on
you own
 Get a roommate
 Continue to overspend until you have
no more credit an are forced to move
 Give up your expensive apartment
and move in with a friend or family
member
 Which option did Texas choose?
 Basically:
The Republic of Texas was
faced with the same dilemma.
 Texas
tried most of the options and in
1845, Texas decided to take advantage
of the option of moving in with a close
friend-the United States.
 In December 1845, Texas was annexed
to the United States as the 28th state in
the Union by a joint resolution
(annexation resolution)

Was
slavery allowed
in Texas?
The Issue of Slavery
 Slavery
became a major issue in U.S.
political, economic and social life.
 Slavery created a widened gap between
Southern states who favored it and
northern states who were not in favor of
slavery spreading.
 This division, called Sectionalism; loyalty
to one’s region
 centered on economics and how people
made a living
The 3 Sections
 North
(NE) - manufacturing
 South (V.A.to T.X.) - was agricultural
(cotton & tobacco)-slave labor only
20% owned slaves- 1% of those
owned more than 20 slaves but they
dominated political, economic and
social life in the south
 West (west of the App mountains to
upper Miss Riv.) - agricultural (food)
w/ small industry & some ranching
and herding
Dates indicate the years in which each state became a state
After
Texas independence
in 1836, Texas could not
become a U.S. state
WHY
NOT?
Disturb the balance of slaves states
& free states in the U.S. Congress.
Free States
Slave States
= more votes
in Congress
 Texas
had to wait until there was a
non-slave state that could be added
at the same time
 Other
states in the United States
began as territories. When there
were enough people in the
territory, they could apply for
statehood.
 Texas was annexed by a joint
resolution because Texas was an
independent nation, not a U.S.
territory. In December 1845,
Texas became the 28th state in
the Union.
Problems Solved:
 The
U.S. forgave all Texas debt.
 Texas was now protected by the
United States Army and Navy.
 The United States had an
established policy regarding
Native Americans managed by
the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
 Texas was now a part of the U.S.
currency and banking systems.
