Sam Houston- Governor of Texas during Civil War.
Opposed Texas secession from the Union.
Abraham Lincoln- President of Union during the Civil
War. Election caused the South to secede.
Jefferson Davis- President of Confederacy
General Grant- Leader of Union Army during Civil War
General Lee- leader of Confederate Army during Civil
War. Surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse.
Battles





Fort Sumter- First battle of the Civil War. No one died
as a result of this battle.
Gettysburg-Bloodiest battle of the Civil War.
Sabine Pass- Confederates defeated the Union. 44
Texas soldiers defeated over 200 Union soldiers.
Galveston Island -Confederate forces defeated a
Union blockade. Allowed Texas to get supplies during the
Civil War.
Palmito Ranch- LAST BATTLE OF THE CIVIL WAR.
Confederates won even though the South had already
surrendered the war.
Effects of the War on Texas






Blockades-Texas could not export cotton. Negatively
affected the Texas economy.
Some goods, such as coffee, were not available. People
had to use acorn and corn to make coffee.
Medicine was scarce. Herbs were used instead.
Many young Texas men died-approximately 55,000.
Texas population increased with slaves and owners.
Many died from disease, exposure, heat stroke,
starvation and murder.
