Respiratory System
Human Anatomy & Physiology

1
Functions of the Respiratory System
• transport of air into and out of the lungs
• entrapment of particles in incoming air
• help to control temperature and moisture content of air
entering the lungs
• produce vocal sounds
• participate in the sense of smell and in the regulation
of blood pH

II. 16.1 Introduction:
The 4 terms associated with respiration
There are 4 terms associated with respirations:
1. Ventilation is the movement of air into and out of
the lungs.
2. Gas exchange is the exchange of gases between the
blood and the air in the lungs (external respiration)
AND the exchange of gases between the blood and
the cells (internal respiration).

II. 16.1 Introduction:
The 4 terms associated with respiration
3. Gas transport is the process of transporting gas in the
blood between the lungs and the cells in the body.
4. Cellular respiration is the process of oxygen
utilization & carbon dioxide production at the
cellular level.

B. Functions of the structures:
1. Mucus functions to entrap dust brought in with inhalation.
2. Sinuses function to lighten the mass of the skull and to
provide vocal resonance.
3. Mucous membranes warm & humidify (moisten) air
entering the nose.
4. Cilia provide movement to the mucus layer so that
entrapped particles are moved into the esophagus and out
of the respiratory tract.

III. 16.2 Organs of the Respiratory System
E. Larynx:
1. The structure of the larynx that helps close the glottis
during swallowing is the epiglottis.
2. The structures of the larynx that produce sound are the
vocal cords.
