Introduction

Classroom Grant 2009-10
Inspired by Interface 2009 Presentation
“How Your Body Measures Up” by Dr.
Jeanine Haistings and Dr. Alison
Wenhart of William Jewell College

GLE’s Addressed: Strand 3
Characteristics of Living Organisms




Complex multicellular organisms have systems that
interact to carry out life processes through physical
and chemical means (SC8.3.2.C.a.-g.).
Identify and give examples of each level of
organization (cell, tissue, organ, organ system) in
multicellular organisms (plants, animals)
(SC8.3.2.C.a.)
Explain the interactions between the circulatory and
digestive systems as nutrients are processed by the
digestive system, passed into the blood stream,
and transported in and out of the cell
(SC8.3.2.C.c.)

Compare and contrast the processes of mechanical and
chemical digestion, and their role in providing materials
necessary for survival of the cell and organism
(SC8.3.2.C.d.)
Identify the importance of the transport and exchange of
nutrient and waste molecules to the survival of the cell
and organism (SC8.3.2.C.e.)
Rotation Rationale




5-7 days, 1-2 weeks (depending upon
how many stations you set up)
Groups of 2 students
Focuses on 6 Organ Systems: Nervous,
Respiratory, Skeletal, Digestive, Muscular,
and Circulatory/Cardiovascular
Other trivia and fun facts are incorporated
as time permits.
Rotations Continued…





7 laptop stations
1-4 additional stations w/o laptops
8 required stations, 3+ optional stations
Duplicate stations are set up as needed
Instructions are given through
PowerPoint presentations on the laptops
or on response sheet. Sample Station
Rotations Continued…


Each station has a paper “response
sheet” that the students fill in with
information they glean from the
PowerPoint presentation and
accompanying hands-on exploration
activity. Both students must
complete their own response sheet.
Before you start, remind students of
safety procedures and “reset”
procedures for each station.
Rotations Continued…


Partners complete each station, bring
their paperwork to the teacher, check off
the station, then move on to any “open”
station that they have not yet
completed. This continues until all
students have completed all stations.
Student Checklist
Students who finish with all rotations
can logon to a laptop computer and
continue to explore the supplemental
websites until everyone is finished.
Student Assessment



After the stations are completed,
students are assessed on basic
knowledge as well as interactions
between organ systems.
Interactions Test
Multiple Choice Test
