Circulatory System
GOAL of The Day
Understand how the lungs and
the heart work together to
transport oxygen rich blood to
cells
Components of Blood
• About 55% of blood is a liquid
called plasma.
– Contains proteins, minerals, and
other substances.
• Red blood cells carry oxygen from
the lungs to the cells.
• White blood cells fight infection.
• Platelets are important for
clotting blood.
Flow of Blood through the heart
1. Blood that is low in oxygen flows
from veins into the right atrium
2. The right atrium sends this blood to
the right ventricle
“LUBB”
• When the atrium contracts and pushes blood into
the ventricle, the closing of the valve produces this
sounds
“DUBB”
• When the ventricle pushes blood into the arteries, the
closing of the valve produces this sounds
3. The right ventricle sends the blood to the
two lungs so that it can be enriched with oxygen
4. The oxygen-rich blood moves back from the
lungs to the heart and enters the left atrium
5. The left atrium sends this blood to
the left ventricle

6. The left ventricle sends oxygen-rich blood to
the whole body through the arteries
