Identify the harmful ingredients in
tobacco smoke and describe how
tobacco affects the body.
Examine the dangers of using alcohol,
short-term effects of alcohol use, and
how alcohol damages body systems.
Lesson 1 –
Tobacco Use:
A High Risk
Behavior





1. Major reason is they feel insecure in social
situations
2. Makes them seem older or more sophisticated
3. Peer pressure or advertising has made it
attractive
4. Teens think that the bad effects of smoking only
occur after many years- begin immediately.
5. They believe they can quit at any time—
addictive




nicotine (the addictive drug)
Numerous chemicals and additives
stimulant (drug that increases the action of the
central nervous system, heart and other organs)
Tar- thick, sticky, dark fluid produced when
tobacco burns
Carcinogens – substances in tar, cancer causing
substances
Carbon monoxide colorless, odorless, poisonous
gas in cigarette smoke which passes through the
lungs into the blood
Over 12 million Americans are regular smokeless tobacco
users
Smokeless tobacco carries many of the same health risks as
cigarettes (addiction to nicotine)
Other risks: mouth sores (can turn to cancer of the lip,
mouth, or throat), damage to teeth and gums, damage to
the digestive system
Which method gets nicotine into the bloodstream faster?
smoking or chewing?


smoking pipes or cigars
inhale less smoke—but more likely to develop
cancers of the lip, mouth, and throat because
more tar and chemicals are generated by pipes
and cigars.
 Short
term effects- immediately
after lighting up
 Long-term effects – occur as the
smoking continues

2 primary diseases associated with smoking
 chronic bronchitis and emphysema
 Chronic bronchitis- condition in which the bronchi are
irritated. The tar from cigarettes builds up and causes
chronic coughing and excessive mucus secretion.
 Emphysema- a condition that involves the destruction of
the tiny air sacs in the lungs through which oxygen is
absorbed into the body. We use 5% of our energy to
breathe, but emphysema causes one to use 80% of their
energy to breathe.
 Lung cancer- directly linked to cigarette smoking and is the
leading cause of cancer deaths among males. Increasing in
females!
 Nicotine makes the heart work
harder and speeds up pulse.
 It also constricts blood vessels, which
cuts down on circulation or blood
flow
 Smoking raises blood pressure which
leads to stroke
 Smokeless tobacco is just as addictive as smoking
 Chewers secret more saliva. Although the excess is
usually spit out, some is unconsciously swallowed.
This introduces tar and other harmful chemicals into
the digestive and urinary systems.
 Leukoplakia- thickened white, leathery-appearing spots
on the inside of a smokeless tobacco user’s mouth that
can develop into cancer of the mouth.
 30,000 Americans annually get oral cancer; only about
50% of these people survive longer than 5 years.

Just as dangerous
 Passive smoke- cigarette, cigar, or pipe
smoke inhaled by nonsmokers as well as
smoke than remains in a closed
environment after the smoker is through
smoking
 Mainstream smoke- the smoke that a
smoker blows off
 Side stream smoke, the smoke that comes
from burning tobacco

Write about your feelings concerning the
smoking ban. Do you agree with all of the
ban? Parts of the ban? None of the ban?

The smoking ban in Illinois states that you cannot
smoke in restaurants or bars.
