Transcript Healthy Brain

We have been learning about ways to
keep our bodies healthy and strong!
Can you name some of the
systems in our bodies?
Circulatory System
Heart
Digestive System
Stomach
Can you think of any other
important systems in our bodies?
The nervous system is another
important system in our bodies!
It is controlled by our brain!
The nervous system includes…
Brain
Spinal Cord
Nerves
The nervous system…
• makes your muscles work.
• gives you information about what is
around you.
• includes the brain and the nerves.

Nerves
Have you ever wondered…
• why you dream?
• why you blink without thinking about it?
• why you breathe without telling yourself
to?
Our brain is in charge of
all of these things!
• It is the boss of what happens in your body.
•It controls all of the other systems in the body.
•It sends messages to the body along pathways
called nerves.
Nerves are like phone lines that run
from the brain to all parts of the
body and back again.

Nerves
Our brains have two parts.
Left
Right
These two parts are mirror
images of each other.
Look at the two water balloons.
They are the same size as these two parts.
Left
Right
Together, these parts weigh
about three pounds!
Each side of your brain is
responsible for certain jobs.
Left
Right
In every person, one side of
the brain is usually the boss.

All Fit with Slim Goodbody:
Brains and Muscles: How Does Coordination Work (2:57)
Try this activity:
Take one step.
Does your right or left foot go first?
Try this activity:
Fold your arms across your chest.
Which arm is on top?
Try this activity:
Clasp your palms, fingers interlocking.
Which thumb is on top?
Try this activity:
Make a telescope with your hands and
hold it up to your eye to look through.
In front of which eye do you hold it?
If your right was on top for most of these
activities, then you are right dominant.
Left
This side of the body is controlled
by the left side of the brain!
If your left was on top for most of these
activities, then you are left dominant.
Right
This side of the body is controlled
by the right side of the brain!
If both of your sides were on top
for these activities, then you
may have mixed dominance.
Left
Right
That means that your body is
controlled by both sides of your brain!
Our brains learn things by doing
them over and over.
Think about this example:
Imagine that you put your dog’s house in a new
place in the yard.
Our brains learns things by doing
them over and over.
Think about this example:
The first few days when he comes to the
door, he will make a faint path in the grass.
Our brains learns things by doing
them over and over.
Think about this example:
After many weeks of going back and forth,
the path will become darker and darker.
Our brains learns things by doing
them over and over.
This is what happens in your brain when you
learn new things:
A path is formed in your brain!
When you first start practicing your
math facts, the path is not worn.
The more you practice your
facts, the more worn the path
will become in your brain.
So, practice really helps us to
learn and remember things!
So, how can we keep our
brains strong and healthy?
1. Go to sleep and get up at the same time each
day.
2. Get the right amount of sleep – not too much,
not too little.
3. Exercise your brain: Do puzzles, solve
problems, and make things.
4. Exercise your heart, which supplies oxygen to
the brain.
So, how can we keep our
brains strong and healthy?
5. Eat protein-rich foods (lean meat, seafood, skim
milk) to activate your brain.
6. Eat foods with calcium (dairy products, lettuce,
spinach) to clean your brain.
7. Eat breakfast. Students who eat breakfast do
better in school.
8. Avoid caffeine. It throws off your brain’s clock.
So, how can we keep our
brains strong and healthy?
9. Say no to drugs and alcohol. They kill brain
cells and can destroy memory.
10. Wear a helmet when skateboarding, biking, inline skating, or doing other risky sports.
