The Exocrine System
(Example Animal Presentation)
What is the endocrine system?
• Endocrine system –
system of glands, each
of which secretes a type
of hormone to regulate
the body
• Signals are passed
through the blood to
target cells or organs
– Hormones fit like a piece
of a puzzle into the target
cell.
What are the main features of the
endocrine system?
• Hormones – molecule
(protein or lipid) that is
transported throughout the
body through blood and
stimulates organs to respond
in certain ways
• Endocrine glands –
ductless glands that produce
hormones
• Target cells – cells that the
hormones bind to in order to
trigger a response
Why is the endocrine system
important?
• Environment is always changing – animals
need a way to help them keep up with it.
• Ex. A high level of
CO2 is detected in
the brain…!!!
Endocrine System in Class Insecta
• Metamorphosis –
change in form
– series of molts as the
larva or nymph grows
into an adult
Endocrine System in Class Insecta
• Metamorphosis is
controlled by
hormones
– Molting is
controlled by
ecdyson
– Final transition to
adult is controlled
by juvenile
hormone
• Absence of
hormone stops
molting process
Endocrine
System in Class
Mammalia
• controls metabolism
• maintains water balance
• regulates the level of
calcium in the blood
• aids in the development of
a proper immune response
• helps the body respond to
stress
• aids in the development of a
proper immune response
• helps the body respond to
stress
• regulates daily sleep-wake
cycles
• regulates the level of
glucose in the blood
• helps in the development of
male/female secondary sex
characteristics
• helps in the production of
eggs, sperm

How does the endocrine system
interact with other animal body
systems?
• Circulatory System: Transports hormones to target
cells throughout the body
• Respiratory System: Can increase or decrease
respiratory rate depending on CO2 levels in the brain
• Reproductive System: Helps in the produce of
sperm and egg (which are necessary for reproduction)
Interesting Fact
In the insect world the largest number of
molts is shown by the silver fish. It can
change its exoskeleton up to 50 times. It is a
primitive wingless
insect which keeps
growing throughout
its life.
Interesting Fact
Diabetes is a disease of the endocrine
system.
Too much glucose is present in the blood
because:
-body can’t produce enough insulin
-cells do not respond properly to insulin
produced
