WHAT ARE HORMONES?
• Biochemical substances
• Chemicals and their processes which occur within living
organisms
• Our body’s chemical messengers
• Glands to bloodstream to cells
WHAT DO HORMONES DO?
Hormones work slowly, over time, and affect many
different processes…
• Reproduction
• Responses to stress and injury
• Growth and sexual development
• Body energy levels
• Internal balance of body systems
• Bone and muscle strength
ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
Endocrine Glands –
Special groups of cells, make hormones.
They have different functions and work
together to keep you healthy.
THE GLANDS OF THE ENDOCRINE
SYSTEM
• Adrenal glands - influence the way your body uses energy, they
also release a hormone called adrenaline when you are under
stress
• Hypothalamus - part of your brain that controls hormone
production by releasing different chemicals to the pituitary gland
• Ovaries - produce estrogen and progesterone in women, and also
release egg cells
• Pancreas - releases the insulin your body needs to metabolize
sugar; problems with the pancreas can lead to diabetes
• Parathyroid - located behind the thyroid gland, they are essential
for proper bone development
THE GLANDS OF THE ENDOCRINE
SYSTEM
• Pineal gland – connects endocrine and nervous systems; produces
melatonin, important to sleep/wake cycles & sexual development
• Pituitary gland – likely the most important gland in your body,
crucial to growth, mental development &reproduction;
influences/controls the endocrine system
• Testes – produce testosterone - maintains sperm production & bone
mass
• Thymus - crucial to normal immune function in childhood; at
puberty, its tissue is replaced by fat
• Thyroid gland – located in the front of your neck, releases hormones
that control your metabolism and govern the way your body uses
energy
FEMALE HORMONES
• Estrogen/Progesterone – Balance each other
• Approx. 60% of US women experience severe PreMenstrual Syndrome (PMDD)
• PMS controlled by sex hormone excretion
• PMDD caused by an imbalance of estrogen/progesterone
• Menopause
MALE HORMONES
• Men have hormones, too!
• Testosterone, DHEA, cortisol, even estrogen!
• Low T levels – decrease with age
• Symptoms – erectile dysfunction; low libido; depression; thin,
wrinkled skin; low confidence; loss of muscle tone, incontinence,
or hot flashes
ADRENAL GLANDS
• Walnut-sized, Sit atop the
kidneys on each side
• Manage stress, sleep, energy,
etc.
• Produce/regulate several
important hormones
• Cortisol, DHEA, adrenaline
ADRENAL GLAND FUNCTIONS
• Sleep Quality
• Immune Health
• Energy Production
• Chronic Fatigue
Syndrome
• Thyroid Function
• Glycemic Dysregulation
• Depression/ADD
PANCREAS
• Vital for energy production, digestion and nutrient
absorption
• Produces INSULIN
• In response to RISING blood sugar (glucose)
• When we eat
• Used as energy after conversion to ATP
INSULIN
• Insulin resistance
• a condition in which the pancreas produces insulin but the body
cells do not respond to it properly
• Diabetes
• Type 1 diabetes develops as a result of an autoimmune attack on
the pancreas
• Type 2 diabetes - 90-95% of diabetics
• Insulin resistance loss of ability to produce
• PREdisposition
•
activated by environmental factors, obesity
and sedentary lifestyle
Symptoms of Imbalance

HORMONE TESTING IN YOUR
HOME
• We will provide you with a saliva and stool sample
collection kit.
• We will be testing levels for:
•
•
•
•
Several sex and metabolic hormones
Insulin, cortisol and DHEA
Immune-based food reactions
Infectious disease, bacteria, parasites, etc.
You may visit our website at puromedicine.com or diagnostechs.com for additional detailed
instructions for completing this kit.
SALIVA TESTING
Cortisol
Circadian
• Multiple points gives more
information
• 92-96% accuracy
• Convenient, risk-free
IMMUNE-BASED REACTIONS TO
FOOD
Immune-based reactions to food, or food allergies, can be
classified as ”classical allergy” or one of two types of immune
reactions.
• Symptoms of food allergy may not be exclusive to the GI system (i.e.
Celiac’s Disease) and may involve:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Skin: hives, dermatitis, eczema
Musculoskeletal: joint pain and inflammation
Respiratory: sinusitis, asthma, Heiner syndrome
Neurologic: headache, migraine, insomnia, irritability
Immune: decreased immune function
Hematologic: anemia, blood clotting abnormalities
General: fatigue, weight loss
IMMUNE-BASED REACTIONS TO
FOOD
• Identification of antibodies to some of the most common food antigens –
gluten (gliadin), milk (casein), egg (ovalbumin), and soy protein.
• Tests Included:
•
•
•
•
Cow's milk (casein) Ab, sIgA
