Joints!
What is a Joint?
Joints are
• Two or more bones joined together
– can be rigid, like skull bones or
– movable, like knees, hips, and shoulders
• Many have cartilage on the ends of the bones where
they come together
– Healthy cartilage helps bones glide over one another and
prevents them from rubbing against each other

Healthy Joints
Keeping your joints healthy
allows you to run, walk, jump,
play sports, and be active.
Physical activity, a balanced
diet, avoiding injuries, and
getting plenty of sleep helps
keep your joints healthy.

Joint Problems
The most common joint problems:
• Osteoarthritis
– Breakdown of cartilage allowing bones to rub together,
– Causes pain, swelling, loss of motion in the joint
– Can be triggered by damage to the cartilage from an injury.
• Rheumatoid arthritis
–
–
–
–
–
Autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks joint tissues
Results in pain, swelling, stiffness, and loss of function
May cause fatigue and fever
Can cause permanent damage to the joints
May affect the heart, lungs, or other organs
• Gout
– Caused by a buildup of uric acid crystals
in the joints
– Can be extremely painful

Arthritis and Drugs
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDS) used to
relieve arthritis pain include
• Acetaminophen (Tylenol®)
• Paracetamol (Panatol®)
• Ibuprofen (Advil®)
• Mefenamic acid (Ponstan®)
• Naproxen (Aleve®)

Problems with NSAIDs
•
•
•
•
•
May reduce kidneys’ ability to cleanse blood
May cause liver damage
May cause death
May cause stomach upset
May not realize how much you are taking as
they are found in many other prescription
products as well as over the counter drugs

Problems with NSAIDs
• Over 175 million Americans
take OTC pain medication
• 44% of the those who took
pain medication in 2002
admitted to exceeding the
recommended dosage
• 16,500 Americans die each
year with 103,000
hospitalized with NSAIDrelated complications

Steroids
Doctors often prescribe a
corticosteroid to relieve acute
symptoms, with the goal of
gradually tapering off the
medication.
Corticosteroid medications, such as
prednisone, reduce inflammation
and pain and slow joint damage,
but side effects may include
thinning of bones, cataracts,
weight gain and diabetes.

Immunosuppressants
These medications act to control an out-ofcontrol immune system, which is causing
rheumatoid arthritis. Examples of
immunosuppressants include azathioprine
(Imuran, Azasan) and cyclosporine (Neoral,
Sandimmune, Gengraf). These medications can
increase your susceptibility to infection.
What your body really needs is the proper
nutrition to correct the immune system itself.

Can Food Really Help?
“You should aim for a diet that’s high in fruits, vegetables, fish,
nuts, legumes, and olive oil. Limit or avoid red meat, dairy,
saturated fats, and sugar to help prevent arthritis and manage
arthritis-related inflammation and pain.”
