Touring
the
Systems
of the
Human
Body
First Stop:
Dramatic Lymphatic Island
• Also know as the
Lymphatic System,
Its Purposes:
• It is the body's network
of organs, ducts, and
tissues that filter
harmful substances
out of the fluid that
surrounds body
tissues.
• Defends the body
against germs like
viruses, bacteria, and
fungi that can cause
illnesses.
• Collects extra lymph
fluid and returns it to
the bloodstream.
Important Destination Spots
(Structures and Functions: Examples)
• Let’s check out the Node-A-Coaster
– Lymph nodes: located in the neck; filters
bacteria, viruses or dead cells out of
lymph; releases white blood cells.
• The Spleen Machine
– largest lymph gland organ; located in
upper left side of abdomen; filters the
blood and releases white blood cells.
• Tonsils – etc.
• Thymus – etc.
Exciting Activities
•Fever Flight – Like Sentries
and Archers who stand on the
castle wall, our bodies lymphatic
system uses a second line of defense
to keep us safe, which includes fever
and inflammatory response as
nonspecific defenses against invading
bacteria and viruses.
Imports & Exports
of the System
• Pus Busters:
– When the body detects some sort of foreign
infection, it immediately begins a response to
neutralize the invader and limit damage to the
system. White blood cells, or leukocytes, are
the cells responsible for immune response in
the body, and are produced in the marrow of
bones. The majority of these white blood cells
are a type known as neutrophil, which are
tasked with attacking foreign bacteria and
fungi.
Dangers/Special Precautions
Visitors Might Encounter
Caution! Glandular Swells:
•Swollen lymph nodes
may signal an
infection.
•There are several
groups of lymph nodes,
which are small, beanshaped, soft nodules of
tissue. The ones most
frequently enlarged or
swollen are found in
the neck, under the
chin, in the armpits,
and in the groin.
Package Deals:
How each destination interacts with another.
Circulatory Overload:
a) Lymphatic Vessels Resemble the Veins and
Capillaries of the Circulatory System
b) The Lymphatic System Returns Fluids to the Blood
c) The Lymphatic System Transports Fats from the
Small Intestine to the Blood
d) The Lymphatic System Helps Defend the Body
Against Disease by sending White Blood Cells
(Warriors) to the field of invasion.
Translation of Language
(Define the terms)
• Lymph - is the fluid that circulates
throughout the lymphatic system.
• Nodes - a small ball or an oval-shaped
organ of the immune system, distributed
widely throughout the body including the
armpit and stomach and linked by
lymphatic vessels.
• Etc.
Answering S7L2.d.
• For each destination, you need
to explain how the destination
(system) helps to meet the needs
that cells have for (oxygen, food
(nutrients), and waste removal.
Final Page of Your Project
• Journal – Write in complete paragraphs
and complete sentences. Answer the
following: Explain how this travel guide has
helped you demonstrate your mastery of the
standards and elements – S7L2.c.d.e. Be
sure to use the language of the standards
and elements in your journal.
