Aspirin inhibits the formation of prostaglandin E
in the midbrain. Since prostaglandin E is the
body’s agent to set in motion the fever
response, giving aspirin blocks a fever. Yet a
fever activates several defense mechanisms
and should not be carelessly brought down. If
the physiological mechanisms of fighting
germs are stimulated at the same time a fever
is reduced, the act of bringing down the fever
is a result of lessening toxicity, a thing of the
body’s own doing.
