Basic facts
• The USA comprises of 50 states and a federal district
(District of Columbia) of the capital city Washington
D.C. → a federal republic
• It has a population of 318 million inhabitants – it is the
third most populated country in the world
• The 48 states and Washington, D.C. are in central North
America between Canada and Mexico. Alaska is the
northwestern part of North America and Hawaii is an
archipelago (= a group of small islands) in the midPacific. The country also has several territories in the
Pacific and the Caribbean (Guam)
• The main spoken language in the United States is
English, but in many areas Spanish is spoken
• The biggest cities are New York, Las Vegas, San
Francisco

US Geography
• The US is a country of many diverse landscapes
• The Rocky Mountains cross from the west to the
centre of the country. The highest mountain in
the US is Mount McKinley (6,194 m) in Alaska
• The central region is dominated by large plains
(prairies)
• In the southwest, there are areas of desert
(Mojave)
• Hawaii is largely volcanic (Mt. Mauna Kea)
• The lowest extreme is Death Valley in California
(−86 m)
• The coast is not too diverse – Florida peninsula

• The Great Lakes (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie
and Superior) are found on the US border with
Canada
• Mississippi–Missouri River is the fourth longest
river system, Colorado river (Grand Canyon)
• The climate is mostly temperate but there are
extremes in Alaska (arctic), and Florida and
Hawaii (tropical). There are also arid conditions in
the southwest
• The Pacific Basin faces danger mainly from
earthquakes, volcanoes, forest fires, the Gulf and
Atlantic coasts must beware of hurricanes and
the Midwest suffers mainly from tornadoes

Political system
• Federal republic = a union of self-governing states
united by a central government. The head of each
state is the governor.
• The federal government consists of three
branches:
1. The legislative power represents Congress which
is made up of the Senate (100 senators, two
from each state) and the House of
Representatives (435 members). The seat is in
the Capitol
2. The president is the head of the executive
power (the White House)
3. The Supreme Court holds judicial power.

• First English settlements in 1607 and 1620 after the
Pilgrims arrived on ship Mayflower to the area named
New England (today Boston)
• The United States was officially founded on July 4,
1776 when 13 former British colonies declared their
independence (celebrated as the Independence Day).
George Washington became the first US president.
• The American Civil War (1861–1865) - 11 southern
slave-keeping states declared their separation from the
United States and formed the Confederacy. They
fought against the Northern States (the Union) where
slavery had been abolished. The Union won – Abraham
Lincoln was the president
• In both WWI and WWII the US began as a neutral state,
but in fact, acted as an arsenal and banker for the
Allies.

• The US belong to the most powerful countries
in the world
• Rich in coal, oil, natural gas, salts, iron ore etc.
• World known brands and companies are: Coca

Microsoft,Facebook, Levis, Nike, Boeing,

• Niagara Falls – on Niagara River on the borders with
Canada (Horseshoe Fall)
• Yellowstone NP – since 1872 the first national park in
the world, known for its wildlife and its many
geothermal features, especially Old Faithful Geyser
(Idaho, Montana, Wyoming)
• The Grand Canyon - in Arizona, it was carved by the
Colorado river 2 million years ago (446 km long, up to
29 km wide, nearly 1,800 m deep)
• Everglades NP – in Florida, special wetland is a habitat
for many animal and plant species (alligators)
• Yosemite NP – in California, rocks and sequoias
• Mt. Rushmore – in South Dakota, a sculpture carved
into the granite (G. Washington, T. Jefferson, T.
Roosevelt and A. Lincoln)
