1860 SC Secession Convention
100% voted to secede from the
Union.

Before election of 1860
(Lincoln became the 16th president)
• Unionists – wanted to stay a part of the union.
They didn’t agree with the North or the federal
government but felt the US Constitution was
well-equipped to protect SC’s way of life.

• Cooperationists – SC people who wanted to
leave the Union BUT only as a last resort AND if
done with the support of the other southern
states.
Secessionist
• Also known as radicals or fire-eaters
• Breaking apart from the Union was the
only answer for SC
• It was not debatable
• Ready to secede as early as 1852 (civil
war started in 1861)
