• Confederacy wanted to retake Galveston-main goal
• Wanted to redeem their pride
• Would give them more places to settle
Changes during the battle
• 1862- William B. Renshaw (commodore) demanded
the surrender of the island city
• island commader had no choice and had to
surrender
• The Union blocked off Galveston for four days
• Galveston remained in Confederate's hands for the
remainder of the civil war
The Effects on lives of the Civilians
• For the families who had loved ones in the war that died,
their lives changed drastically
• The men got the money so many women suffered when the
husband died
• Life was never the same for the ones who were in war
• The suffered from thousand yard stare or shell shock

casualties.

Battles, the other was on
October 4, 1862
• The attack was early in the
morning
• Many were killed when a
bomb went off to early
• They took ships called the

to New Orleans
