New Orleans about one a.m.
It happened on December 5,1889, and the
event was announced throughout the
union.
Jefferson Davis attacked fort Sumter
before Lincoln got the supplies there.
On December 1860, Davis gave a speech
in which he carefully distinguished
between independence, which the states
had achieved at great cost, and the Union,
which had cost " little time, little money,
and no blood," .
